Russian cities to host contest

For the first time in its 52-year history, the Tchaikovsky Competition will take place not only in Moscow but also in another Russian city.

The 2011 competition will be presented June 14 to July 2 in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Moscow Conservatory's Great Hall, the usual venue, is undergoing a renovation scheduled to be completed just before the event.

Competition chairman Valery Gergiev said the hall might not reopen in time, however, and moving half of the competition to St. Petersburg would be a good solution.

Moscow will host the piano and cello competitions; St. Petersburg, the violin and vocal contests.
