Sir Donald Runnicles

Sir Donald Runnicles’ contract with the Deutsche Oper Berlin has been renewed until 2027

Sir Donald Runnicles, who earlier this month was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, has been extended as General Music Director (GMD) of the Deutsche Oper Berlin through 2027.  Runnicles has been GMD since 2009, will continue to work alongside intendant Dietmar Schwarz and managing director Thomas Fehrle, whose contracts were extended through 2025 and 2027, respectively.  Amidst the pandemic the Deutsche Oper has been an intrepid and enterprising company, and launched a new Wagner Ring cycle in 2020, its first new production in nearly 40 years.

Says Dr. Klaus Lederer, Senator for Culture and Europe and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees: “The top management of Schwarz / Runnicles / Fehrle has significantly shaped and promoted the artistic and economic development of the Deutsche Oper Berlin in recent years. I am pleased that the Board of Trustees has approved the contract extensions and that the successful work of the management trio can thus be continued.”
