THIS was a fitting end to the first concert season in Butterworth Hall following its £7 million revamp.

A young virtuoso violinist, two Russian orchestral favourites, a 20th century American concerto and a couple of encores for good measure, meant there was something for all musical tastes on Tuesday.

And although 22-year-old Chloe Hanslip, playing Philip Glass’s moody, shimmering Violin Concerto, was undoubtedly a star, the real highlight was the slow, powerful performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade which oozed rich harmonies and rhythms, climaxing with the dramatic shipwreck of Sinbad’s ship.

By contrast, Tchaikovsky’s Marche Slav, which had opened the concert, rather raced along.
