This award, introduced in 2010, is the only Gramophone Award to be decided by public vote internationally. Of this Kavakos said: “[The award] comes from the voting of the audience – that is, the people who love music and come to the concerts – and in that respect I think it’s the greatest honour.” The previous winners of this prestigious award are Alison Balsom, Joseph Calleja, Gustavo Dudamel and Joyce DiDonato. Kavakos was awarded the Gramophone Concerto Award in 1991 for his BIS recording of the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä. Now, 23 years later he has been voted Artist of the Year for 2014 by Gramophone readers and music lovers around the world.
