Touring North America Fall 2014

“This is dance at its most riveting and fearless. Talent? I should say so.”
The Independent

A “viscerally thrilling” (The Telegraph) “adrenaline rush” (The Times), BalletBoyz began in 2001 as the brainchild of former Royal Ballet dancers Michael Nunn and William Trevitt. Described by The Guardian as “a paradox of muscular impact and weightless flight,” the company’s evocative style sets new standards for dance as the company graces the stage with ferocity, strength and determination, as well as tremendous elegance and poise.

In 2010, with the end of their own performing careers approaching, Nunn and Trevitt made a drastic decision. Encouraged by the success of their community projects with boys and young men – which showed that raw talent, set in the right direction, can often trump formal training – they held a series of open auditions. The young men they selected, aged between 20 and 25, came from a wide range of dance backgrounds; one had no formal experience at all. The pair knew they had valuable knowledge to impart, and according to Billy, “we wanted to have the first go at molding them.”

They christened the project BalletBoyz: The Talent. The new bunch, possessing “bodies honed for heavy industry strut like Greek gods,” (The Independent) were blessed with the vibrancy of youth. But it was a risk. Would the BalletBoyz brand be strong enough to take a wholesale change of personnel? Clearly, it was. Ticket sales soared. The new band of boys sold out every venue on its first tour, even those deemed ‘difficult’ by Arts Council England. Popular response through social media created an unstoppable surge that in itself attracted new young audiences.

Trevitt explains to Dancingtimes, “...we particularly wanted to have dancers from different backgrounds, not necessarily just with classical training... ones that our eyes were drawn to: with some kind of charisma, a particular movement, an ability or style.” Nunn interjects, “We really didn’t want a faceless contemporary dance company... We wanted people to come and to know them as individuals... Personalities on stage and not just their bodies.”

Over the last decade, Michael and Billy have established themselves as one of the most cheekily original and innovative forces in modern dance. They have built a huge following through their groundbreaking TV productions for some of the UK’s leading broadcasters including BBC, Channel 4 and Sky. In the US, they have appeared as guest judges on Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance and hosted their own spinoff series A Chance to Dance on Ovation.

BalletBoyz has been an Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells since 2005.
