The much more feeling-orientated sound world of Sergei Rachmaninov, which reaches an artistic peak in the third piano concerto, is likewise in safe hands with Rattle. Especially since, in Yefim Bronfman, this late Romantic jewel found an extraordinary soloist to champion it. With classy elegance, the American pianist mastered the most challenging glissandi and chordal summits of the “elephant concerto”, and made the most unwieldy passages sound graceful and intelligible. A world-class interpretation, thanks also to a colour-studded orchestral accompaniment at eye level. Standing ovations.
