"We painted it together," writes Rosanne Cash in the liner notes of her new album The River and the Thread (Blue Note), thanking her co-writer, producer and husband John Leventhal. With Cash writing the lyrics and Leventhal composing the music, what the couple painted on the album is a vivid portrait of the South—from the hardscrabble childhood home of her father, Johnny Cash, in the Sunken Lands of Arkansas; to her own birthplace of Memphis; to Mississippi's Tallahatchie River, haunted by the deaths of Robert Johnson and Emmett Till. Mixing family history and present-day scenes with flights of the imagination, The River and the Thread is an extraordinary travelogue in song.
