Darknesse Visible
Inon Barnatan, piano
Avie Records

Israeli pianist Inon Barnatan has built his superb disc of music focusing on dark and light around Thomas Ades' mesmerizing "Darknesse Visible," which is based on a song by John Dowland. The recital includes Ravel's "Gaspard de la nuit" and "La valse," Debussy's "Suite bergamasque" and Ronald Stevenson's vivid "Fantasy on 'Peter Grimes' " (from Britten's opera). Barnatan, a pianist of enormous sensitivity and dynamism, brings richly expressive artistry to each piece. Grade: A -- Donald Rosenberg
