Set in 19th-century Massachusetts during the Civil War, the story follows Marmee (Dern) and her four daughters as they navigate love, ambition, and hardship in their father’s absence. As Jo (Ronan) pursues a writing career in New York, Meg (Watson) builds a family, and Amy (Pugh) travels to Paris with Aunt March (Streep), the sisters are ultimately brought back together by Beth’s (Scanlen) illness. Gerwig’s adaptation draws from Alcott’s letters and diaries as well as the original novel, creating an expanded retelling of the classic source materials and proving that some stories are truly timeless.
