Equally at home in opera and musical theater, Grammy-nominated conductor James Lowe continues to earn acclaim for his “beautifully sculpted” performances (Opera News). In the 25/26 season, he makes notable debuts with the Shakespeare Theatre Company for Guys and Dolls, Chicago Opera Theater for Der Silbersee, Billings Symphony Orchestra for their Holiday Concert, and The Phoenix Symphony for two programs: The Music of Elton John and Dolly Parton’s Threads: My Songs in Symphony. He also returns to Washington National Opera to conduct West Side Story and to Lyric Opera of Chicago to lead and arrange A Night of Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness, a groundbreaking symphonic reimagining of The Smashing Pumpkins’ iconic 1995 album.

In the 24/25 season, Lowe debuted with the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra in Sweeney Todd, returned to The Atlanta Opera for Rent and La bohème, and conducted Il barbiere di Siviglia at Lyric Opera of Kansas City. The 23/24 season included debuts at Lyric Opera of Kansas City (The Sound of Music), San Diego Opera (El Milagro del Recuerdo), and Opera San Antonio (The Pirates of Penzance), along with a return to Washington National Opera for Songbird.

Lowe’s creative flair is evident in his arrangement of Songbird, an adaptation of Offenbach’s La Périchole in the style of 1920s New Orleans jazz, presented at The Glimmerglass Festival. Additional credits include La bohème at Houston Grand Opera, The Lion, The Unicorn and Me at Washington National Opera, Show Boat at The Glimmerglass Festival, The Little Prince at Utah Opera, and Madama Butterfly at Tulsa Opera. His arrangements are featured on The Metropolitan Opera’s Three Divas Live in Concert, recorded at the Palace of Versailles.

Lowe made his European debut conducting Candide in Francesca Zambello’s production at Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse and Opéra National de Bordeaux, and recently led Turandot at Tulsa Opera. He has also appeared with San Francisco Opera, New York City Opera, and on Broadway.

A long-time collaborator with Houston Grand Opera, Lowe has conducted Carmen, Le nozze di Figaro, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Sweeney Todd, and the world premieres of Jake Heggie’s The End of the Affair and Rachel Portman’s The Little Prince. He also led Jonathan Dove’s Flight at Pittsburgh Opera Center, and conducted Florencia en el Amazonas and Of Mice and Men at Utah Opera, and Little Women at Lyric Opera Cleveland.

On Broadway, Lowe served as Music Director and Conductor for the revivals of Les Misérables and Anything Goes (Tony Award-winning, starring Sutton Foster and Joel Grey), and made his debut conducting Gypsy with Patti LuPone. He was also Music Supervisor for the national tour of Anything Goes, and currently serves as U.S. Music Supervisor for the North American tour of The Phantom of the Opera.

Lowe received a Grammy nomination for the Anything Goes cast album, which he conducted and co-produced. He has appeared with the cast on The Late Show with David Letterman, CBS Early Show, and A Prairie Home Companion. He has toured nationally with My Fair Lady and The Light in the Piazza.

In concert, Lowe has collaborated with Sir Elton John, Randy Newman, and Booker T. Jones, and accompanied Betty Comden in a performance of his own arrangements. His Gershwin arrangements have been performed by Joyce DiDonato at Lincoln Center and Wigmore Hall.

A multi-instrumentalist, Lowe performed with the rock band Backwash as keyboardist, guitarist, lead singer, and songwriter, co-producing their album Goin’ to the Mall (Transit Records, 1995). As a pianist, he has soloed with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and performed at the Aspen Music Festival, Chautauqua Institute, and other venues.

Lowe has taught at Syracuse University, Hochstein Music School, and served as Music Director of the Butler Opera Center at the University of Texas.
