The Assad Brothers Farewell Tour

Sérgio and Odair Assad’s North American Farewell Tour begins on February 7 in Puerto Rico, marking the 60th anniversary of one of the most impactful partnerships in classical guitar history. The Brazilian-born brothers made their U.S. debut at New York’s 92nd Street Y in the 1980s, and the tour comes full circle with a final return to that same stage—an apt conclusion to a career that has reshaped the influence of the guitar duo.

Over six decades, the Assad Brothers have set a global standard for virtuosity, stylistic range, and brilliantly conceived duo textures. Trained in Brazil’s rich musical traditions and under guitarist and lutenist Monina Távora, a disciple of Andrés Segovia, the Assads inspired an extraordinary body of repertoire written expressly for them by composers including Astor Piazzolla, Terry Riley, Radamés Gnattali, Nikita Koshkin, and Roland Dyens. Sérgio Assad has further expanded the duo’s legacy through his own compositions, now central to their concert programs.

Celebrated for performances that seamlessly blend Latin American music, folk and jazz influences, and classical masterworks—from Bach and Scarlatti to Gershwin and Debussy—the Assads have collaborated with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Gidon Kremer, Dawn Upshaw, and Paquito D’Rivera, and appeared with leading orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the São Paulo Symphony. Their playing has drawn international praise for its singular sound and uncanny ensemble unity, described by The Washington Post as “two instruments and one brain.”
