Der Standard“The choir girls sing – with a clear tone, and full of feeling”
Emerging from Vienna’s long choral tradition, the Vienna Girls Choir continues the Vienna Boys Choir’s legacy of excellence with a distinct voice and vision of its own. Founded in 2004 with just a handful of singers, the ensemble has since flourished into a full-fledged choir of 26 girls between the ages of 10 and 14. Since September 2024, the singers have been official students at Campus Augarten, where they receive the same rigorous musical training as members of the Vienna Boys Choir — including singing lessons, choir rehearsals, solo work, voice training sessions, concerts, and tours.
The choir first captured international attention in 2023, performing alongside the Vienna Boys Choir and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the orchestra’s iconic New Year’s Concert conducted by Franz Welser-Möst. The ensemble’s achievements have continued to grow, with 2025 marking a major milestone: the choir’s first international tour through Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Slovenia, and Italy.
Recent highlights include a New Year’s Eve concert at the Brucknerhaus in Linz, an emotional performance of Arthur Honegger’s Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher at the Vienna Musikverein with Academy Award-winning actress Marion Cotillard, and performances at the Vienna Konzerthaus in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. The Vienna Girls Choir has also appeared at the wien modern Festival, performing Mark Andre’s “rwh 1–4” in St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
The ensemble often performs in collaboration with the Vienna Boys Choir, including appearances at the 2023 Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert, the reopening of the Austrian Parliament, the Vienna Boys Choir’s 525th Anniversary Concert, and the Choir’s annual Mother’s Day Concerts in the Vienna Musikverein.
For Erich Arthold, President of the Vienna Boys Choir, the establishment of the Vienna Girls Choir represents a natural evolution of the institution’s legacy: “It was important to us to create equal opportunities and give boys and girls the chance to develop their own independent profile.”
Concert performance remains at the heart of the ensemble’s passion. “You can really feel the enthusiasm in the audience,” says 13-year-old Blanka, a member of the choir. “It’s a very special feeling — and I think it makes us sing better.”
In recognition of their artistry and impact, the Vienna Girls Choir received the Austrian Musical Theatre Prize in 2023 and, together with the Vienna Boys Choir, the European Cultural Award in 2024 at the Luxembourg Philharmonic Hall.
