Benjamin Beilman has won international praise both for his passionate performances and deep rich tone which the Washington Post called “mightily impressive,” and The New York Times described as “muscular with a glint of violence.” The Times has also praised his “handsome technique, burnished sound, and quiet confidence,” and the Strad described his playing as “pure poetry.” A 2018 feature in The Boston Globe remarked that Beilman’s “playing already has its own sure balance of technical command, intensity, and interpretive finesse.”
During the Beethoven celebrations in 2020, Beilman will perform the Beethoven Concerto with the Budapest Festival Orchestra conducted by Marek Janowski, the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal with Han-Na Chang, and the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse in Sokhiev’s closing concert as Musical Director of the orchestra. He will also play Beethoven on tour in Poland with the Wroclaw Philharmonic and Giancarlo Guerrero. Other highlights in 19/20 include debuts with the Minnesota Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä, the Gürzenich Orchetra (Cologne) with Elim Chan, and the Tonkünstler Orchestra, with whom he will perform the Thomas Larcher Concerto in Vienna, and Baden, and go on to record the Concerto with Hannu Lintu at Grafenegg Festival. Further appearances include performances with the Utah Symphony, Pacific Symphony, Danish National Symphony, and Antwerp Symphony. He will also return to play-direct the London Chamber Orchestra.
Highlights of Beilman’s 2018-19 season include play-directing and curating a program with the Vancouver Symphony; making his debut at the Philharmonie in Cologne with Ensemble Resonanz and with the Munich Chamber Orchestra in Koblenz; performing Four Seasons with the Cincinnati Symphony and Richard Egarr; returning to the City of Birmingham Symphony; and debuting with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Elim Chan. In recital, he was presented by Lincoln Center in New York, Spivey Hall in Atlanta, and at the Kennedy Center in DC, and appeared in performances of Mozart Sonatas at Philadelphia’s Perelman Theater and at Carnegie Hall with pianist Jeremy Denk. His European recital and chamber music engagements included the Moritzburg Festival in Dresden, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and Wigmore Hall for a BBC Radio 3 live broadcast.
In past seasons, Beilman has performed with many major orchestras worldwide, including the Rotterdam Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, London Chamber, Scottish Chamber, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Zurich Tonhalle, San Francisco Symphony, and several times with the Philadelphia Orchestra, including a performance at Carnegie Hall. He has also worked with conductors such as Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Andrey Boreyko, Karina Canellakis, Lahav Shani, Krzysztof Urbanski, and Juraj Valcuha. In early 2018 he premiered Demons, a new work dedicated to the political activist Angela Davis written by Frederic Rzewski and commissioned by Music Accord which he has performed extensively across the US.
Beilman studied with Almita and Roland Vamos at the Music Institute of Chicago, Ida Kavafian and Pamela Frank at the Curtis Institute of Music, and Christian Tetzlaff at the Kronberg Academy, and has received many prestigious accolades including a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, an Avery Fisher Career Grant and a London Music Masters Award. He has an exclusive recording contract with Warner Classics and released his first disc ‘Spectrum’ for the label in 2016, featuring works by Stravinsky, Janáček and Schubert. Beilman plays the “Engleman” Stradivarius from 1709 generously on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation.
