LA PHIL ANNOUNCES ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR AND DUDAMEL FELLOWS FOR 2017/18 SEASON

PAOLO BORTOLAMEOLLI NAMED LA PHIL ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR FOR 2017/18 SEASON

TIANYI LU, RUTH REINHARDT AND JONATHON HEYWARD SELECTED FOR THE LA PHIL’S 2017/18 DUDAMEL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association has announced the appointment of former Dudamel Fellow Paolo Bortolameolli as Assistant Conductor of the LA Phil for the 2017/18 season. As part of his duties, Bortolameolli will serve as the cover conductor for Gustavo Dudamel and guest conductors throughout the orchestra’s subscription season and on tour. He will also conduct the Toyota Symphonies for Youth Concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall on February 24 and March 10, 2018.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association has also announced the three conductors who will participate in the 2017/18 Dudamel Fellowship Program – Tianyi Lu, Ruth Reinhardt and Jonathon Heyward. Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, together with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, created the Dudamel Fellowship Program in 2009 to provide a unique opportunity for promising young conductors from around the world to develop their craft and enrich their musical experience through personal mentorship and participation in the LA Phil’s orchestral, education and community programs.

“This program continues the LA Phil’s commitment to supporting and training the next generation of exceptional conductors,” commented Dudamel. “I am very honored to work with these young Fellows from all over the world and provide them with support in the coming season.”

The Fellows will work alongside Dudamel and musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, as well as visiting artists and conductors, and will also work with students in key LA Phil education programs. The program for each of the Fellows will run separately. The Fellows will hone their skills through observation and application, such as conducting Los Angeles Philharmonic youth concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall, participating as cover conductors, and serving as mentors themselves through participation in programs such as Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA).

Ruth Reinhardt (Germany), who will be conducting:

March 24 and 31, 2018

Ruth Reinhardt earned her master’s degree in conducting from The Juilliard School, where she studied with Alan Gilbert. She is currently the Assistant Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under Music Director Jaap van Zweden. She was Associate Conducting Fellow of the Taki Concordia program with Marin Alsop and the regular conductor of New York City-based ÆON Ensemble. Reinhardt was also a Conducting Fellow with the Seattle Symphony and Tanglewood Music Center. Recently, her performances with the Musikkollegium Winterthur were made into a major broadcast on Swiss TV.

Reinhardt gave her critically acclaimed subscription debut with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra last November, when she stepped in to replace Stanislaw Skrowaczewski. Also last season, Reinhardt made debuts with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Indianapolis Symphony and led concerts with the Seattle Symphony. Later this summer, she makes her conducting debut in Scandinavia conducting the Malmö SymfoniOrkester in Sweden.

Born in Saarbrücken, Germany, Reinhardt began her formal musical education at the age of six studying violin, and completed her studies at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) with Rudolf Koelman. Reinhardt began conducting studies in 2004, with Constantin Trinks, and continued formal studies at the ZHdk with Johannes Schlaefli and Ulrich Windfuhr. She has participated in masterclasses with Bernard Haitink, David Zinman, Michael Tilson Thomas, Paavo and Neeme Järvi, Marin Alsop and James Ross.

As a child, Reinhardt was a member of the Children’s Chorus of Saarländisches Staatstheater (Germany), which began her appreciation for opera. She has conducted performances of Die Fledermaus at the Leipzig University of the Arts, and Dvorák’s Rusalka and Weber’s Der Freischütz for the North Czech Opera Company. At age 17, she composed and conducted a children’s opera in her hometown, and in Zürich, Reinhardt conducted the premieres of two: Die Kleine Meerjungfrau by Swiss composer Michal Muggli and Wassilissa by German composer Dennis Bäsecke.
