Euroarts will release the Berliner Philharmoniker’s 2010 European Concert featuring conductor Daniel Barenboim and American cellist Alisa Weilerstein on DVD on September 28, 2010.  The concert of Wagner’s Prelude to Act 3 of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Elgar’s Cello Concerto and Brahms’s Symphony No. 1 in C minor was filmed at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford, England on May 1, 2010.

The Berliner Philharmoniker’s annual European Concert is held in a different European city each May Day to commemorate the Orchestra’s founding in 1882.  This year’s sold-out concert at the historic theatre at the University of Oxford was described by The Observer’s music critic Fiona Maddocks as “life-changing” for those in the 800-seat audience.  She wrote:  “On rare occasions, one racks one's brains to work out what had made a concert so thrillingly exceptional. How could a performance of Brahms's Symphony No 1, an orchestral warhorse as quintessentially standard as repertoire can be, leave an entire audience wandering around in a daze, talking a kind of ecstatic gibberish?... Life-changing is not part of the permitted critical vocabulary, but I will use it here.”

The concert also proved life-changing for its soloist, 28-year-old cellist Alisa Weilerstein, who was invited to perform the Elgar Cello Concerto by Mr. Barenboim.  Prior to the Oxford concert, Barenboim and Weilerstein had performed this work with the Berliner Philharmoniker at the Berlin Philharmonie, marking Ms. Weilerstein’s debut with the orchestra.

In his review of the Oxford concert, The Guardian’s Tom Service said: “Alisa Weilerstein gave the most technically complete and emotionally devastating performance of Elgar's Cello Concerto that I have ever heard live, with an orchestral accompaniment she can only have only thought possible in her wildest dreams, with the subtlety, sensuality, and insight of Barenboim's conducting.”

Ms. Weilerstein recalls that any nerves she had about performing before a live television audience were overshadowed on the eve of the Oxford concert by a more basic concern:  “There were a lot of May Day revelers outside in the streets, singing and dancing until all hours!  It was the night before this incredibly exciting and important performance, and I couldn’t get any sleep, although I am not sure I would have anyway!”

Ms. Weilerstein made her BBC Proms debut with the Minnesota Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä on August 27 performing Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 and she will also perform this work on a 14-city U.S. tour with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic led by Yuri Temirkanov in March and April 2011.  This tour will include concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, Boston’s Symphony Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington and Carnegie Hall.
