Choreographer, dancer, producer and leading exponent of Argentinean tango Milena Plebs began her career with Grupo de Danza Contemporánea del Teatro San Martín de Buenos Aires (Contemporary Dance Group of the San Martín Theatre of Buenos Aires) where she was a dancer from 1980 -1986. In 1986 she joined Claudio Segovia and Héctor Orezzoli’s Tango Argentino, the extensive tour of the production is credited with revitalizing tango for audiences worldwide. In 1990 Milena Plebs formed her own company, Tango X 2, with partner Miguel Zotto. They collaborated on the creation, choreography, production and performance of several works including Tango X 2, Perfumes de Tango, and Una Noche de Tango. Plebs and Zotto also choreographed Operetta María de Buenos Aires for the Houston Grand Opera in 1991. Their works revolutionized what a live tango show could be and were toured throughout Argentina, Europe and North America
Other projects include conception and choreography of Romance de Barrio in Buenos Aires (1999), Coreografías para Conciertos by Pablo Ziegler Stavanger in Norway (2001) and for the Piazzolla Tango Center in Buenos Aires (2003). Milena Plebs appeared in the films Tango, bayle nuestro written by Jorge Zanada; Oratorio a Carlos Gardel by Horacio Salgan and Horacio Ferrer; Flo by Eduardo Mignogna; Tango, a documentary by the National Geographic Society; and Assasination tango directed by Robert Duvall. Together with Ezequiel Farfaro she choreographed and appeared in the documentary Milena baila el tango… con Ezequiel Farfaro: Acerca de un proceso creativo under the direction of Rodrigo Peiretti in 2005.
Over the past decade she has continued to choreography and perform around the world including the “5° Cumbre mundial del tango en Rosario” and tributes to legendary tango music composer Carlos Gardel. Milena Plebs was the subject an exhibition by photographer Alejandra Quiroz, “Milena del Sur.” In 2001, she choreographed and performed a series tango concerts of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra in Norway with music director and pianist Pablo Ziegler. In 2003, Milena Plebs choreographed the first season of the “Piazzolla Tango” at the Art and Show Center in Buenos Aires.
She is tenured academic at the “Academia Nacional del Tango” and patroness of the Carlos Gardel statue in Abasto in Buenos Aires. She continues to teach tango throughout the world and participates in tango congresses and festivals. Milena Plebs premiered Sintonías in September of 2008 at the I Festival Rojas Danza. In 2009, her latest work Tramatango for Milena Tango Dance Theater debuted in collaboration with Alejandro Cervera.
Milena Plebs has received numerous awards for her work including “María Ruanova" in 1991, the most distinguished award for Argentine dance, “Trinidad Guevara in 1994", for Perfumes de Tango, and the Italian dance prize "Premio Gino Tanni" in 1998. Her written work has been published in La revista del Tango (The Tango Magazine).
