This season, American tenor Frank Porretta returns to the Washington National Opera to open the season as Cavaradossi in Tosca and the Austin Lyric Opera as Calaf in Turandot. He recently made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Calaf, a role which he also recently sang for his return to the Hollywood Bowl (with Gustavo Dudamel conducting), the Pittsburgh Opera, and for his debut at the Florida Grand Opera. Other recent North American Opera engagements have included his house and role debut as the title role in Don Carlos at the Cincinnati Opera, and his house and role debut the title role in Samson et Dahlila at the Pittsburgh Opera, and his debut at the Canadian Opera Company as the title role in Otello.
Mr. Porretta recently returned to the Deutsche Oper Berlin in Otello, which he also sang for his European debut in 2002 at the Teatro Maestranza in Seville. He has since appeared at the Berliner Staatsoper, Staatsoper Hamburg, Sächsische Staatsoper (Dresden), Bayerische Staatsoper, Wiener Staatsoper, Opéra National de Paris, L’Opera de Nice, L'Opera de Montpellier, Teatro Real (Madrid), Teatro Regio di Torino, Teatro Massimo in Palermo and Opera Australia. Mr. Porretta’s vast repertoire includes the title roles in Samson et Dalilah, Otello and Andrea Chenier, Manrico in Il Trovatore, Don Alvaro in La Forza del Destino, Radames in Aida, the Duke in Rigoletto, Riccardo in Un Ballo in Maschera, Pollione in Norma, Dick Johnson in La Fanciulla del West, Calaf in Turandot, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Luigi in Il Tabarro, Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, Canio in I Pagliacci, and Don Jose in Carmen.
A native of New York, Mr. Porretta received his musical training at the Juilliard School of Music.
